What is hypnosis?

Hypnosis is a natural process of bypassing the critical conscious mind and stimulating parts of the mind of which we are not normally conscious.  There are many different applications of hypnosis including self-hypnosis, stage hypnosis, impromptu or ‘street’ hypnosis and hypnotherapy.

How is hypnotherapy different from hypnosis?

Excellent Question!  Ask any two hypnotherapists and you’ll likely get two different answers.  I would define hypnotherapy as the skillful use of hypnotic communication to lead people towards making positive changes in their lives.  Hypnotherapy is about using hypnosis to help you make powerful positive permanent life changes.

The goal is always to help you find within yourself the resources you need to resolve whatever problems you think you have.

Does hypnotherapy really work?

Absolutely, provided you are truly ready to change.  Thousands of people just like you have resolved issues just like yours and there is now neuroscientific evidence that hypnosis causes measurable changes in the brain.  Please check out my testimonials page to read how I have helped people create powerful change.

But will it work for me with my problem?

If you are able  to read and understand these words you have the mental capacity to be hypnotised.  Hypnotic change, however, is not for everyone.

Effective hypnotic change work requires YOU  to be truly motivated to change.  YOU need to take responsibility for the changes you want.  YOU have to be truly ready to participate in your own change process.  Hypnotic change is not something that is done TO you, but rather is a collaborative process created WITH you.

Together, we explore possibilities for change:  I will guide you, but I can’t make the change happen for you.  That said, I have seen motivated clients make amazing changes in their lives.

What does it feel like to get hypnotised?

There is no one specific hypnotised feeling.  Hypnosis can be experienced in different ways by different people.  Most people find hypnosis to be relaxing and a very enjoyable and interesting experience.

You enter a non-usual state of awareness where your attention becomes highly focused as your ordinary thought processes are bypassed.   While in trance, you can discover and engage with natural mental processes and phenomena of which you are not typically aware.

Are there any side effects?

My clients generally report a pleasurable sense of mental and physical relaxation and well-being as side effects of the hypnotic change process.  These side effects have been known to last for weeks or even months!

What sorts of issues can it help?

Hypnosis is a powerful process that is all about making change, whether its changing AWAY from something you don’t want in your life  or TOWARDS something that you want more of.

Perhaps you want LESS stress, or to release a phobia or anxiety.  Maybe you’d like to kick some unwanted habit like smoking, overeating, or drug abuse (including heavy drinking).   Hypnosis can even help with pain management and some sleep disorders.

Or perhaps you want MORE out of life?  More confidence, increased performance, enhanced natural abilities.  More self-awareness, more success in your chosen sport.

Maybe you just want more pleasure out of life.

Hypnosis really is “the difference that makes a difference” whatever your issues or goals might be.

How long does a session take?

Allow 60 – 75 minutes for a typical session.  The first session usually involves some extra discussion and a bit of form filling so often takes 75 – 90 minutes.  Children’s sessions are generally 45 – 60 minutes.

How many sessions will I need?

Hypnosis can produce very effective results in a comparatively short time when compared to other approaches.  It is impossible to predict exactly how many sessions might be needed to resolve a given issue for a particular client.

Some of my clients have had life-changing results from a single session, others  continue to make changes across a series of sessions.

You can expect rapid powerful changes.  Several sessions might be needed as you integrate the changes into your life.

Will I lose control during my sessions?

Absolutely not.  In fact, your hypnosis sessions will only work if you remain focused and choose to follow instructions.

Rather than being a loss of control, hypnosis can help you take back control of parts of your life that may seem out of your control right now

Will hypnosis make me tell you all my deep dark secrets?

No. Your secrets are safe.  You always remain fully aware and in control throughout your sessions, so what you do or don’t reveal is always your choice.

 You don’t even have to tell me the specifics of what you want to change!  So long as YOU know what you specifically want to change and how you will feel once you have resolved the issue, we have all we need to create powerful change for you.

Do I have to revisit childhood experiences?

No. Revisiting the memories of painful traumatic experiences is absolutely not necessary for powerful change.

During a session, you  might spontaneously become aware of some significant experience from earlier in your life that relates to the issue at hand.  When this happens, the memories can always be processed in a safe and comfortable manner without re-stimulating any pain or trauma.

Do I have to lie down on a couch?

No.  Lying on a couch will often encourage ‘nodding off’ and hypnotherapy cannot proceed if you fall asleep during a session.  For this reason I prefer to work with clients sitting comfortably upright in a chair.

Will I have amnesia afterwards?

Definitely not.  You’ll remember as much from your session as you would from any normal conversation.  Clients generally tend to describe our sessions as memorable.

Does hypnosis work for children?

Yes, although they must be old enough to understand spoken language.   Any children under 12 must have a parent or care-giver with them.   For 12 – 16 year olds, written permission is required from their parent or care-giver.

Can I bring a support person with me?

A support person is welcome to attend.  They will be expected to sit silently while the session proceeds.
